MEET YOUR FARMER: SARAH VANACORE

This is Sarah Vanacore’s second season at Glidden Point, and she’s the third member of our Farm Crew. A rising Senior at UMaine Orono, she’s getting her degree in Marine Science, and is a prolific shot putter and hammer thrower on the track team.

There are obvious benefits of having a star athlete & student on the Farm Crew. While John and Colin are well accustomed to the special kind of grind that is required to run an oyster farm, the long days can come as a surprise to new farm hands. Luckily for us, after working in our Retail Store last year, Sarah made a smooth transition into a valuable member of the crew. She’s always willing to go the extra mile, or hammer through a lunch break to finish the task at hand. She shows up early (seems to be a trend around here), she never complains, and instead provides much comic relief through the most trying of days by telling stories about her family’s new pup, teaching us tik-tok moves while culling, and helping the rest of us relive raucous college days through her animated retellings.

Sarah dreams of having her own oyster farm, and this is the driving force behind her work ethic. Her capstone for her degree focuses on finding the ideal conditions for a farm in the Sheepscot River, where she is also currently helping us tend our sister farm created with the Midcoast Conservancy. We’ll be happy to hold onto her for as long as we can before she sets out to forge her own path and start an oyster farm. Keep an eye out for her in the next couple years, she’ll be one to watch.

Sarah’s a rock star! Helped me out with my online order last week; super friendly, great to deal with when there was a mistake in my order! Y’all stay healthy! Your oysters are a Blessing out here in West TX, delivered cold and fresh! Ordered two types this week! Many of my Facebook friends are getting jazzed about ordering too!
