Carlisle Island Oysters are grown by our Operations Manager, Max Ritchie. Max started the farm last year, picking a site downriver of Glidden Point, in the lee of Carlisle Island, a small island island in the middle of the Damariscotta between South Bristol and Boothbay. This is his second year growing oysters, and all Carlisle Islands are surface cultured. This year, Max bought larger seed which have resulted in a market size product that is ready in less than a year. Carlisle Islands taste distinctly salty due to their proximity to the ocean and rich, with a taste akin to a long simmered broth.

I vacationed in Maine this fall and visited Glidden Point oyster farm. I tried each of the oysters that were available that day, and they were all wonderful. I was very pleasantly surprised to find they ship oysters direct to the home consumer at an affordable price (about the same or less than buying them in a restaurant). No more grocery store oysters for this Ohio native. I can get next day fresh oysters vs who knows how many days old (or weeks) in the stores here. The Carlisle Island Oysters were amazing. I’m a big fan of this level of salinity in oysters.
