Glidden Point and Midcoast Conservancy collaborated to grow oysters in the Sheepscot River. Midcoast is responsible for placing over 13,000 aces of land into conservation, with focus on land adjacent to the Medomak River, Sheepscot River, and Damariscotta Lake. It was a natural next step and partnership for the two organizations to pair up and grow oysters together.
This is the first year that Sheepscots are ready for market, and we're excited to share them with you in the name of conservation. Eponymous Sheepscot Rivers are surface cultured, grown in the body of water just west of the Damariscotta, a larger estuary with greater saline input due to the breadth of the river mouth to the Atlantic Ocean. The river is home to two large islands, Westport Island and Southport Island, spanning large swaths of the river. The Sheepscot River is also one of the last remaining locations in Maine where rare Atlantic Salmon return to spawn, there must be something special in the water here.
