Snow Island has been one of our Coastal Harvesters farm partners since we began the wholesale business at Glidden Point, in the late summer of 2019. Snow Island Oysters are grown in Quahog Bay, in Harpswell, by Quahog Bay Conservancy (QBC). For many generations, the water in the bay was a place where commercial fishermen and their families made a living. The bay was also home to many recreational fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts. In recent years, pollution and a changing climate threatened the health of the bay. QBC has actively taken on initiatives to support the ecosystem by providing pump-out boat services, starting sustainable aquaculture operation, monitoring the ecosystem and water quality, and engaging in community education.
100% of the sales of Snow Island oysters goes back to the non-profit efforts. The mission of Quahog Bay Conservancy is to revitalize the ecosystem of Quahog Bay to a robust and resilient state for all communities that depend on it. They aim to conserve natural habitat, protect native wildlife, foster environmental stewards, and support Maine’s working waterfront.
